Furniture Care & Saftey Guide
Preserving Natural Beauty, Designed to Endure
At Sun Republic, our collections are crafted from high-quality natural materials including reclaimed teak, American oak, microcement, stone, woven cane and sustainable fibres.
These materials are chosen for their character, durability and authenticity. With considered care, your pieces will age gracefully and continue to bring beauty and function to your home for many years.
Understanding Natural Materials
Natural materials evolve.
Timber may deepen or lighten in tone.
Cane fibres may settle slightly.
Reclaimed wood may show historical markings.
These are not defects — they are hallmarks of authenticity.
We celebrate what we call refined imperfection: furniture with warmth, depth and story.
Initial Care Upon Delivery
• Gently wipe surfaces with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove transit dust.
• Allow natural materials to acclimatise to your home environment.
• Avoid immediate prolonged exposure to direct sunlight after unpacking.
Everyday Care & General Maintenance
Cleaning
• Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
• For spills, wipe immediately using a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap.
• Dry surfaces promptly.
• Avoid bleach, acidic products, abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
• Always wipe timber in the direction of the grain.
Protective Measures
• Use coasters, trivets and placemats to protect against heat and moisture.
• Place trays beneath vases and plant pots.
• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperature changes.
• Maintain stable humidity where possible.
Care by Material
American Oak & Indoor Teak
Finished with Osmo PolyX Raw (pigmented hard wax oil).
• Rejuvenate every 12–18 months (6–12 months in high-use areas).
• For restoration, lightly sand with 400-grit paper and reapply Osmo.
• Avoid excessive water exposure.
Natural grain movement and subtle texture variation are expected features.
Outdoor Teak
Teak naturally ages to a soft silver-grey patina.
• Clean regularly to remove dirt buildup.
• Use Golden Care Teak Cleaner, Protector or Shield to maintain original colour.
• Light sanding may be required before applying care products.
Microcement
• Wipe with a soft cloth and pH-balanced cleaner.
• Avoid acidic or abrasive products.
• Use trivets and protective pads.
• Avoid prolonged direct UV exposure to minimise fading.
Stone (Including Amalfi Collection)
• Clean with mild soap and water using a soft cloth.
• Always use trivets to prevent heat or water marks.
• Avoid acidic substances such as vinegar or citrus cleaners.
Natural veining and variation are part of the stone’s beauty.
White Cedar / Mindi Wood
• Clean with mild soapy water and a soft cloth.
• Avoid excess moisture.
Malawi Cane & Woven Natural Fibres
Our Malawi cane pieces are individually handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional techniques.
Each piece is unique, with variations in weave, tone and texture that reflect its handmade origin.
Air & Circulation
Cane is a breathable natural fibre and requires airflow.
• Keep dry and avoid prolonged exposure to humidity.
• Suitable for indoor use or covered outdoor areas only.
• Poor airflow combined with moisture may cause mould — this is preventable with regular care.
Cleaning
• Dust gently with a soft cloth or brush attachment vacuum.
• Wipe spills immediately with a damp cloth and mild soap.
• Dry promptly.
• Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach.
Conditioning Natural Fibres
In very dry environments, fibres may become brittle.
To maintain suppleness (for raw, unsealed pieces only), treat every 6–12 months with:
• Tung oil (maintains natural tone)
• Boiled linseed oil (slightly deepens tone)
• Furniture oil spray (ideal for smaller pieces)
Always test a small area first.
Handling & Use
• Avoid concentrated pressure on one area.
• Do not sit on chair edges.
• Twist loose fibres back into place — never pull.
• Rotate decorative pieces occasionally to prevent uneven sun exposure.
Outdoor Cushions (Sunbrella®)
• Brush off loose dirt regularly.
• Clean with mild soap and rinse thoroughly.
• Air dry completely before storing.
• Store cushions during extreme weather conditions.
Jute Rugs
• Vacuum in the direction of the weave (no beater brush).
• Rotate regularly to prevent uneven fading.
• Use an underlay to protect flooring.
For spills or pet accidents:
• Treat immediately.
• Use a 1:1 vinegar and water mix for stains.
• Use baking soda for odours.
• Never pull loose fibres — twist gently back into place.
Product Expectations
Each Sun Republic piece is unique.
Knots, grain variation, tonal differences, small splits and subtle irregularities are natural characteristics of authentic materials and are not considered faults.
These details reflect the integrity of the material and the hands that crafted it.
